A Bit About Uncertainty
There isn't a lot of certainty in the world, in fact the only thing we can really be certain of is that over time things change. Below is your personalised report on your relationship with uncertainty. Once you have read and digested it you may find the video that follows it is of help.
Uncertainty is a subset of stress. Stress is all about fear, which means when we look at uncertainty we are examining part of your relationship with fear. Some of us have a high tolerance for uncertainty, some seek uncertainty out and others actively avoid it.
Our behaviours around uncertainty will fall into the headlines of fight, flight or freeze although being human we have evolved many different ways of expressing and avoiding any of those reactions. The most common of these is to attempt to exert almost superhuman levels of control over situations and circumstances where we have little or no control.
If your relationship with uncertainty is part of your relationship with stress then there will, for many, be relationships with other reactions that can stay with us for some time, such as anxiety and in some cases close links to depression.
For those of us who suffer from anxiety and face an uncertain situation it can be unhelpful to be told that it is not in fact the situation that is causing the anxiety but the way we are reacting to it.
The fact that there are so many that find themselves able to be comfortable with uncertainty versus those that don't suggests, however, there is some truth in this suggestion. This also means that there will be strategies and tactics that we can learn to make our relationship with this uncertainty healthier.
In this section we will examine your tolerance of uncertainty and how you behave when faced with uncertainty.
